The TerraPi Project: Eastern Cape, South Africa

TerraPi works on 10,000+ hectares of biodiverse but degraded land adjacent to the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve. This critical Kouga River catchment area provides the water needs (personal and industrial) for the Nelson Mandela Metroropolitan area, currently experiencing a water crisis.

TerraPi has hosted the 'Water Neutral Initiative', being the first private land owner/community implementation with WWF, The 'Kouga Restoration Project', a research study on the most effective restoration approaches to this national invader plant problem.

TerraPi tackles ecological and social challenges hand in hand. It promotes sustainable land use practices. It employs and trains the disadvantaged. It educates schoolchildren and orphans. It Cares for its People, Its Environment and shares surplus as well as promotes life on all levels.

TerraPi creates opportunities through a progressive multi-cultural approach, building skills and self-respect within the community for sustainable livelihood development.

TerraPi is a Champion Project, able to inspire economic and social stability  in the rural landscape by showcasing 'PES' and corporate initiatives in conservation. We provide corporates the opportunity to become 'GREEN' by supporting Educational Programs, Community Food Garden Projects and Water Neutral Initiatives.

TerraPi lies along the southern border of the world heritage site, the Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve, just off the Garden Route of South Africa.

TerraPi invites visitors to come and visit our Organic Gardens, Our PermaCulture Design Zones, the mountains, the rivers and the vibrant community. We encourage people to come and have a look at what is possible, book a Tipi and walk around. You will be amazed. Bring your company and have a party/conference/gathering/breakaway or whatever we can come up with and enjoy the experience of visiting something so different, it seems familiar.

TerraPi for Everyone

TerraPi Community

TerraPi is a Section 21 NPO (Non-Profit Organisation) that focuses on long-term solutions to complex environmental and social issues facing South Africa.

TerraPi pioneers revolutionary concepts in:

  • Diversification of land use,
  • PES (Payment for Ecosystem Services),
  • PermaCulture applications in food and water security
  • and a unique opportunity to view an integrated approach to people in their environment.

We invite you to bring your knowledge, share your ideas and grow this Demo Model into the next inspirational approach towards living a healthy, integrated lifestyle.

By visiting TerraPi, you are creating tourism employment opportunities for people who have had no alternatives other than sheep farming.

You are supporting 2 National Pilot Projects, creating a platform for education on all levels.

You are also taking with you the knowledge that your contribution will help create awareness about living within the limits of our ecosystems as well as how to address environmental issues communally.

Come and stay for a few nights in our exclusive Tented Tipi Camp, breathe in the scented air of our fynbos and never feel the need to leave
